Product Details

Dropmore Scarlet Honeysuckle is a hybrid cultivar that typically grows as a shrub or small tree. It features clusters of tubular, scarlet-red flowers with orange throats that bloom profusely in late spring to early summer. These flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, making it a great choice for wildlife gardens. The foliage is dark green and semi-evergreen in warmer climates, providing interest even when the plant is not in bloom.

  • Size: This honeysuckle can reach a height of 8 to 12 feet (2.4 to 3.7 meters) and a spread of 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters) at maturity.
  • Exposure: Plant Dropmore Scarlet Honeysuckle in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained soil with good organic content.
  • Planting: Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball of the plant. Plant it at the same depth as it was growing in its container. Space multiple plants about 6 to 8 feet apart to allow for adequate air circulation.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the plant's establishment period. Once established, it is somewhat drought-tolerant but will benefit from regular watering during dry spells.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring before new growth begins to support healthy foliage and flowering.
  • Pruning: Prune Dropmore Scarlet Honeysuckle after flowering to remove any dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant. You can also prune lightly throughout the growing season to control its size and shape.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Dropmore Scarlet Honeysuckle is relatively pest and disease-resistant. However, keep an eye out for aphids, which can sometimes infest the plant. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to control aphids if necessary.
  • Support: Provide support for the plant if growing it as a vine or train it onto a trellis or other support structure to encourage upright growth.
